Suspected squirrel activity: assessment before action

A noise in the loft does not establish the species or the correct response. Record ordinary observations and seek competent advice before considering exclusion or control.

Start with what you know

Describe the sounds or sightings, their timing and where they appear to occur. Say whether an animal has actually been identified. Roof activity, visible damage and unexplained noise are observations rather than a technical diagnosis.

Do not climb to inspect roof edges, disturb a possible nest or open an unsafe loft area. A safely taken photograph can describe the building but cannot settle the appropriate course of action.

Identification and legal context matter

The RSPCA provides information about living with squirrels, while government pest-control guidance explains why permitted animals and methods matter. Species and the proposed action need appropriate professional advice.

This page does not instruct visitors to trap, relocate, release or kill animals. Ask a competent professional what is lawful and suitable for the actual circumstances before agreeing any work.

Discuss the whole property assessment

Ask what inspection covers, what access is needed and how findings will be recorded. Include known roof works, earlier advice and shared-building restrictions where relevant.

Any exclusion or repair proposal should consider current activity and the structure. Do not simply seal an opening because you think it is an entry point; ask the assessor what checks and timing are appropriate.

Compare scope rather than labels

  • Species identification and the limits of the initial inspection.
  • Any relevant legal or wildlife checks before proposed work.
  • Access equipment, building work and who authorises it.
  • Follow-up, monitoring or maintenance included in the price.
  • Written findings, instructions and terms from the contractor.
